How much does a website cost in South Africa?
Why the same brief comes back at R4,000 and R80,000, what actually sits behind each number, and the running costs that rarely make it onto the quote.
Send the same one-paragraph brief to five people and the quotes will not be within an order of magnitude of each other. That is not five people guessing. It is five people solving five different problems, all of which can honestly be called “a website”.
You are not buying one thing
“A website” covers at least three products that share a name and nothing else.
- A builder subscription you set up yourself. Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and the rest. The software cost is a monthly fee and the real cost is your weekend. It works, it looks fine, and you own very little of it.
- A bought template, configured for you. Someone buys a theme, swaps in your logo, pours in whatever copy you send, and hands it over. Fast and cheap because most of the decisions were made by a stranger for a business that is not yours.
- A custom build. Structure planned for your customers, copy written for the searches you want to win, design made for that content rather than content poured into a design. Slower and more expensive because someone is doing thinking you would otherwise have to do.
A cheap quote and an expensive quote are usually not the same job done at two speeds. They are usually two different products. That is worth establishing before comparing numbers.
What actually moves a custom quote
In roughly the order that matters:
- Page count, and how many need copy written. Ten pages you have written is a different job from ten pages someone else has to write. Writing is usually the single biggest gap between two quotes that look alike.
- What has to work besides text. A contact form is nothing. A booking calendar that syncs to your diary, a payment flow, a members’ area, a product catalogue with variants: each is its own build.
- Whether anything is being migrated. Moving an existing site, keeping its URLs alive and not losing the rankings it already has, is real work that a new build does not carry.
- How many approvals stand between kick-off and launch. One decision-maker is quick. A committee is not, and the quote either reflects that or the timeline quietly slips.
- Whether the brand exists. If there is no logo, no colours and no photography, someone has to make or source them.
The costs that rarely make it onto the quote
The build price is not the cost of having a website. These run whether anyone mentioned them or not:
- Domain renewal — annual, small, and the one nobody notices until the site disappears.
- Hosting — monthly or annual, and the difference between cheap and adequate shows up as page speed.
- SSL certificate — often included now, occasionally not. Worth asking rather than assuming.
- Plugin or app licences — booking systems, form builders and shop extensions frequently carry their own annual fees. Ask which of them renew.
- Maintenance — updates, backups and monitoring, either paid as a plan or paid in your own time.
Ask for those five as a separate annual figure before you sign anything. A quote that only shows the build number is not wrong, but it is not the whole cost either.
What I charge, and why there is no price list
Two services here carry a published range because they genuinely can: email marketing automation runs R3,000 to R35,000 depending on sending capacity and how complex the automation is, and TikTok monetisation setup starts at R1,500.
Website design and development is quoted per project: a fixed price for a fixed scope, agreed in writing before anything starts, that does not move unless the scope does. Not an hourly rate that runs, and not a range so wide it tells you nothing.
I am also not publishing what other South African agencies charge. I have not audited their pricing, and a made-up benchmark is worse than none. If you want a market number, get three real quotes on one written brief.
How to compare quotes so the numbers mean something
Write one page before you speak to anyone. How many pages. Whether the copy exists. What has to work besides text. Whether anything is being migrated. Who signs off. Send that identical page to everyone you ask.
Then, for each quote:
- Is the copy included, or assumed?
- What would make this number go up? A specific answer means the scope was thought about.
- What does year one cost in total, including hosting, domain and any licences?
- Who owns the site, the domain and the hosting account? The answer should be you, in your name, from day one.
- What happens if I leave? A good answer is boring: you keep everything, and it is an export and a handover.
Once the quotes genuinely describe the same job, the cheapest one is often the right one. The problem was never that cheap is bad. It is that cheap and expensive were answering different questions.
What a cheap site actually costs
The failure mode is not a site that breaks. It is a site that works perfectly and sells nothing: a template with your logo on it, copy written in twenty minutes, and no thought given to what a customer types before they find you. It looks fine. It sits there. Eighteen months later you pay again to have it done properly, and the second bill is the real price of the first one.
That is not an argument for the most expensive quote either. It is an argument for knowing which of the three products you are buying, and buying that one deliberately.
