Port Elizabeth or Gqeberha: which should your website target?

The city changed name in 2021 and search behaviour did not follow. Both names are worth covering, and there is a right place for each.

Short answer: both. Longer answer: they do different jobs, and putting them in the wrong places is how a page ends up reading like it was written for a crawler.

What happened, briefly

Port Elizabeth was officially renamed Gqeberha in 2021. The official name is Gqeberha. The name a large number of people still type into Google is Port Elizabeth. Both of those things are true at once, and a business that picks one and ignores the other is choosing to be invisible to part of its own market.

This is not unusual. Place names change faster than habits do, and search behaviour is habit. What is unusual is how many local businesses have quietly optimised for exactly one of the two — which means the gap is genuinely available.

Why you cannot just pick the one that “wins”

It is tempting to look for whichever name gets more searches and write for that one. Two problems with it.

The first is that the split is not stable. It has been moving since 2021 and it will keep moving as the official name settles in. Optimising hard for whichever is ahead this year means redoing it later.

The second is that the two names are not used by the same people in the same way. In my experience on this, the older name turns up more in casual searches and the official one more in anything formal, official or recent — but I want to be straight with you that this is a pattern I have noticed rather than a figure I can cite. What is certain is that both names return real people with real intent, and covering both costs you nothing extra.

Where each name belongs

This is the part that actually matters. Covering both is not the same as mentioning both everywhere.

  • Google Business Profile: the official name. Gqeberha. This is a formal record and it should match reality. Google knows the two refer to the same place.
  • Address and contact details: the official name. Same reason. Consistency across your site, your profile and every directory matters more than which name you chose, so pick the official one and use it everywhere without exception.
  • Page titles and headings: whichever the searcher would type. This is where the older name earns its place. A heading reading “SEO in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)” covers both in a form a person can read out loud.
  • Body copy: whichever is natural in the sentence. Both, but not mechanically. If a paragraph reads worse for having both names in it, it has too many.
  • Structured data: both, properly. Schema.org lets you give a place a name and an alternateName. Use Gqeberha as the name and Port Elizabeth as the alternate. That is one clean statement that they are the same place, rather than a page repeating itself.

The thing that actually decides local rankings

Naming is worth getting right, but it is not the biggest lever. Consistency is. Your business name, address and phone number need to be identical everywhere they appear: your own site, your Google Business Profile, and every directory that carries you.

The usual problem is not a wrong name, it is an old listing nobody remembers creating, carrying a number that stopped working two years ago. Those quietly undercut the listings you do maintain. Auditing them is dull work and it moves the needle more than most of what gets sold as SEO.

After that: proximity to the searcher, which you cannot change, and having a page that actually matches what was searched for, which you can. Someone searching for one service should land on a page about that service, not a homepage that mentions six.

A short checklist

  • Google Business Profile uses Gqeberha, and the category and service areas are filled in.
  • Name, address and phone number are identical across the site, the profile and every directory.
  • Old listings with dead numbers have been found and fixed or removed.
  • Page titles carry the name a customer would actually type, in a form a human can read.
  • Structured data names Gqeberha with Port Elizabeth as alternateName.
  • Each service has its own page, so the search and the landing page match.

What this site does

Everything above, which seemed like the minimum before writing about it. The SEO page carries both names in its heading, the organisation schema names Gqeberha with Port Elizabeth as the alternate, and each of the six services has its own page rather than an anchor on a shared one.

If you want the same audit run on your listings, that is the first thing the SEO work covers, and it is usually where the quickest movement comes from.
